Things to remember if Involved in Car Accident

If you have been involved in a car accident you will inevitably have to deal with your insurance company as well as the insurance agents of others involved in the accident. Filing an insurance claim and handling insurance adjusters can be quite a task. We recommend that you hire an attorney to help you, but if you decide to do it on your own, here are some suggestions as what you should do:

1. Make sure everyone in your vehicle is ok.
2. Pull your vehicle over to the side of the road if possible.
3. Call the police and notify them of the accident immediately.
4. Call for an ambulance if you or your passengers feel any pain.
5. Have your information (license, insurance, registration) ready for the police.
6. Do not discuss the accident with the other party, but take notes if they discuss it with you.
7. Pay special attention if the other driver had been drinking or was otherwise impaired (i.e., eating/drinking in the car or on their cell phone).
8. Stop any witnesses and get their contact information. Ask the witnesses what they observed and ask them to wait for the police to arrive so that they can give their statement to the police. If they do not want to wait, get their license plate information.
9. Take photographs of your vehicle and of the other vehicle if possible. Also take photographs of road obstructions, if any.
10. If you do not go to the hospital, visit your family doctor or another provider that same day, if possible.
